BOSTON, Mass. - Boston Celtics rookie Baylor Scheierman stole the spotlight with a career high 20 points on Tuesday night, leading Boston to a 104-96 win over the Brooklyn Nets.
Scheierman scored an incredible 20 points in just 16 minutes, converting on 7-8 shots from the floor, including 6-7 from three-point range. Scheierman also grabbed three rebounds and dished out one assist in the Celtics victory.
"It's pretty special. When I hit that buzzer-beater and the crowd was going crazy, top three environment I've ever been a part of. It's special and that is what makes Boston the best sports town in the country," Scheierman said after fueling an electric atmosphere at TD Garden.
Cold water was dumped on the rookie during his postgame interview by his Celtics teammates, symbolizing the only thing that could cool off Scheierman during his career night. Playing without NBA All-Stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, Scheierman seized his opportunity to help Boston get the narrow win.
"Baylor changed the whole game for us," Celtics guard Derrick White said postgame to Melisa Valdez.
"He's always had that confidence," Boston Celtics Head Coach Joe Mazzulla said after the win. "A lot of it is a matter of timing. A lot of it is opportunity, and it's the moments you get. You've got to deliver."
The 2024 first round draft pick out of Creighton has now appeared in 18 games with Boston this season. Scheierman is averaging 1.7 points, 1.4 rebounds, and 0.7 assists in 7.9 minutes per game. During the month of March, Scheierman has seen his role increase with Boston. Before his big performance on Tuesday, Scheierman scored a career-best 15 points in a career-high 30 minutes against the Philadelphia 76ers on March 6th.
Scheierman has appeared in 25 games this season while on assignment with the Maine Celtics, the NBA G League affiliate of the Boston Celtics. Scheierman last appeared with Maine on February 1st against the Birmingham Squadron. During his time with Maine, the rookie averaged 19.4 points, 6.4 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 1.2 steals in 34.3 minutes per game.
The Maine Celtics (20-11) return home to the Portland Expo on Thursday night for a battle with the Osceola Magic at 7 p.m. Featuring special themed Maine Celtics uniforms, Thursday will be "EmpowHER Night," presented by TD Bank.
