JD Davison Poised to Make History as Maine's All-Time Scoring Leader in Home Opener

PORTLAND, Maine – JD Davison is just five points away from franchise history.  

If all goes to plan, Davison will become Maine’s all-time career scoring leader during Friday night’s home opener against the Westchester Knicks.

Since Davison was drafted by Boston with the 53^rd overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, he’s been a two-way player for the Celtics and quickly become a fan favorite in Portland with his highlight reel dunks. He’s also an NBA Champion, winning the 2024 NBA title with Boston after the Celtics defeated the Mavericks in five games.  

“I just wish I could wear it every day,” Davison said on receiving his NBA Championship ring. 

The third-year guard out of Alabama sits five points behind the Maine Celtics all-time scoring record of 1,591 points, held by Chris Wright. Davison entered the season 66 points away from becoming Maine’s all-time leading scorer, and he’s wasted no time in closing the gap on Wright.  

In his first two games of the 2024-25 season, Davison scored 61 points, dished out 28 assists, and grabbed 11 rebounds while only turning the ball over four times. Davison is taking the next step as floor general for Maine in his all-important third season with the Celtics organization.   

“A lot of confidence coming in, knowing that year three is a big year for me as I try to get an official roster spot with the Boston Celtics,” Davison said.  

Davison is already the franchise’s all-time career assists record holder with 744 in 90 games (including this season). He’s also third all-time in steals (97) and seventh in rebounds (434). His 90 games played in a Maine uniform is currently fourth in the franchise’s record books. Splitting his time between Boston and Maine in an all-important third season, Davison isn’t worried about breaking records.  

“When I first got here this year, people started calling me a vet. I’m not a vet yet,” Davison said. “I just want to come here and lead our guys and try to make sure everyone is happy, doing their job, and I can be the best that I can be.” 

Davison is set to join the list of all-time greats in Maine’s 6-year history when he surpasses Wright in scoring. Wright reached his record-setting tally of 1,591 points in 84 games with then, the Maine Red Claws. Wright’s career in Portland began in 2011, when he was selected with the third overall pick in the 2011 NBA Development League Draft. Wright appeared for the Red Claws from 2011-2014 and was named to the Futures All-Star roster for the 2014 NBA D-League All-Star Game. Wright is also first in made field goals, free throws, second in total rebounds, first in steals, and fourth in blocks.  

Davison surpassed Omari Johnson on the franchise’s scoring list in Maine’s season opener against Long Island. Johnson scored 1,545 points in 99 games with the Red Claws. Johnson was selected 39^th overall by Maine in the 2024 NBA Development League Draft. Johnson suited up for Maine for two seasons from 2014-2016, averaging 15.6 points per game. Johnson’s 99 appearances for Maine are third all-time and he’s also third in total rebounds with 656.  

Fourth on the all-time career scoring record list is Trey Davis, who still holds the record for most points in a single game after scoring 57 against the Magic in 2018. Davis played in Maine from 2017 to 2019 and scored 1,413 points in 109 games played, which is the most game appearances in franchise history. Davis is also second all-time in assists (451) and in steals (104).  

When Davison’s career in Maine is all said and done, his name will dominate the franchise’s record books. The dynamic guard has already cemented himself as one of the franchise’s all-time great players as he pursues his dream of a fully guaranteed NBA contract.
