Local Architecture Firm SMRT To Announce Winner of “SMaRTer Together” Design Challenge
PORTLAND, ME – The Maine Celtics today announced that as a part of their partnership with local architecture and engineering firm SMRT, the team will host its second annual “SMRT Night” during tonight’s game vs. Greensboro at the Portland Expo.
During tonight’s game, representatives from SMRT will announce the winner of this year’s “SMaRTer Together” challenge, a community program designed to promoted STEM education in the Greater Portland area. Now in its second year, the program offered middle and high school members of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Southern Maine the chance to participate in a team competition to design a new fictional arena for the Maine Celtics.
“This has been a great partnership and a unique opportunity for these kids,” said Maine Celtics Team President Dajuan Eubanks. “We were blown away by the results in last year’s competition, and expect nothing less from these Boys and Girls Club members.”
“SMRT is proud to continue our partnership with the Maine Celtics to bring STEM opportunities to the youth of Greater Portland,” said Senior Principal and Director of Education and Athletics Practice Nick Vaughn. “We’ve been impressed by the enthusiasm and creativity shown by the Boys and Girls Club members, and we are looking forward to celebrating their accomplishments with the Celtics at the Expo.”
The students have learned the critical aspects of sports and arena design with one-on-one guidance from SMRT Architects and Engineers. The teams then got a behind-the-scenes tour of the Portland Expo and met with coaches, players, and staff to discover the important aspects of a basketball facility. After a celebration event at the SMRT office in Portland, the teams will attend tonight’s Maine Celtics game, where the winner will be announced at center court.
