Celtics Acquire Phillip Wheeler Via Trade

Evans Boston /March 8, 2025

Portland – The Maine Celtics today announced that the team completed a trade prior to the March 7 trade deadline, acquiring forward Phillip Wheeler from the Texas Legends.

In exchange, Maine sent the Returning Player Rights to D’Moi Hodge and Maine’s own first- and second-round selections in the 2026 NBA G League Draft to Texas.

Wheeler is a four-year G League veteran, having played for Mexico City, Rio Grande Valley, Iowa, and Texas. This season, Wheeler played 32 games for the Legends, averaging 16.8 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game. Wheeler has surpassed 30 points twice this season, including a career-high 35 points vs. Mexico City on Feb. 8. He has played in 121 career G League games.

Wheeler fills an open roster spot; Maine waived guard Donald Carey, Jr. earlier in the week. Carey played in 22 games for the Celtics this season, averaging 5.8 points per game. He played 22 games for Maine last season as well.

Wheeler is expected to join Maine on its current road trip, starting with their March 8 game in Cleveland.
