PORTLAND, Maine- The Maine Celtics spread some holiday cheer on Monday night by helping make sure some local kids would have a Happy Holidays.
The Celtics teamed up with Bill Dodge GMC Buick and Target in South Portland to take members of the local Boys and Girls Club on a shopping spree for their families. Five kids were paired with five Celtics players and coaches and together, they helped cross things off their family's wish list.
"It feels good, kind of getting into the holiday spirit. We get to spend some time with the kids and take them shopping, you know, just spend some time with them," Celtics Two-Way Player Anton Watson said.
The kids were able to spend some big bucks to pick out gifts for their loved ones this holiday season. From TV's to an Xbox, to furniture and a special necklace for mom, these kids were able to spoil their families like never before. It was a great way for Celtics players to get out in the community and provide a great example as role models for the kids.
"I think it's huge. I feel like it's a way we can pay back, is to help the community, help the youth, and be role models," Watson said.
Still, there were more surprises in store. After the shopping spree at Target, the kids met the players and coaches back at the Portland Expo for a tour of the locker room and a pizza party. Waiting for them at the Expo was a final surprise from the team. Not only were they able to get presents for their families, but all the items are their personal wish list were also waiting to be unwrapped. The kids opened their presents and finished off a special night with the team.
"They love it. I know if I was a kid around this time being around professional athletes, that's pretty cool. Just being in their presence, being around them is special to them," said Watson.
Each child also received tickets to an upcoming Maine Celtics game at the Expo. On the court, Maine now travels to Orlando, Florida to play two games in the NBA G League Winter Showcase on December 20 and December 22.
